Week 5 EOC: Super Bowl Commercial

The most successful commercial in the 2013 Super Bowl was without a doubt the Go Daddy commercial; it wasn’t necessarily the best one or the most elaborate one, but it sure was the most successful and memorable. Why is that? You may ask. Well there are several reasons, I’m just going to point out three.

First of all, it was funny, and no one can deny that, as well that no one can deny that funny commercials work. They are like that joke you will never forget and will keep telling every now and then. There is no doubt that image of a dorky looking kid making out with a super model in the most awkward way is both funny and hopeful (to some kids).  “Heart and or Humor. One that tickles the funny bone, makes you laugh out loud and call a person in the other room … “Hey, you’ve gotta come see this commercial …”

Second, it had a famous person, the gorgeous, (voted #1 on Maxim magazine's Hot 100 list of 2012.), Israeli model, Bar Refaeli. This is another big fact in any commercial because it makes it seem more professional, and again more memorable. You may sometimes recall a commercial just because it had your favorite celebrity. “Many mentioned the use of an iconic-type character as being an integral part of making a commercial stand out from the pack.”

And finally, what’s its probably the greatest factor, is that it made people talk about. This commercial wasn’t the most controversial of the Super Bowl, but it was the most talked about, it was the most tweeted. Probably because it was so unexpected, and shocking. I have to say, It was hard me to watch it, between the sounds, and the close up they did on their mouths, and the fact it wasn’t a normal kiss, but a full hardcore kiss, I’ve never even seen a kiss like that on a movie (at least not that close). But even thought it was hard to watch, you couldn’t stop looking at it! It was like a train wreck, and even made feel wrong after watching it. But all of that made people talk about it, and they are still doing it, and even thought you may not like the commercial, you will never forget it!

So the whole purpose of a successful commercial, is that people remembers it, the company and the product. And the Go Daddy commercial did it. “If you don’t remember the product or service, the ad is a failure. The ad should address a need, demonstrate how the product or service meets the need, and do it in a compelling, memorable way, with a device known as a hook. 25 years after it ran, people still remember Wendy’s “Where’s the beef?” ad. It is a great example of saying, “Wendy’s burgers are so big, they stick out from the bun. The other guys’ burgers are so small, you have to look for the patty!” Beautiful. Dang. Now I’m hungry for a Wendy’s burger.”
